Gus Szamboti is universally recognized as one of the most legendary, iconic master cuemakers in the history of pool and billiards. Making cues from 1969 until his passing in 1988, Szamboti’s work is revered alongside George Balabushka for redefining custom cue design, extreme precision, and unparalleled hit quality.
Today, original Gus Szamboti cues are highly prized, elite collector pieces that routinely sell for thousands of dollars, while modern licensed replicas allow players to experience his classic designs.
Hallmark Features of an Original Gus Szamboti Cue
- Signature Points: Long, razor-sharp veneered points (often at least 4 inches long) transitioning seamlessly into figured Birdseye Maple forearms.
- The Butt Sleeve: Renowned for distinctive wood “windows” (such as Maple blocks or half-circles) accompanied by Mother-of-Pearl diamond and dot inlays.
- Joint and Pin: Built with a traditional piloted stainless steel joint utilizing a solid 5/16-14 pin construction.
- Materials Used: Typically featured Delrin or Acetal butt caps, ivory ferrules on original shafts, and original Cortland or Penn Irish Linen wraps.
- Stitch Rings: Often featured intricate multi-colored “stitch” or slotted accent rings flanking the joint and wrap areas.
