Herman Rambow (1881–1967) is universally recognized as the “grandfather of the custom two-piece pool cue” and one of the most legendary figures in billiard history. Operating out of Chicago for decades—most famously crafting out of the Keefe & Hamer Co. sporting goods house—Rambow created highly sought-after custom cues for legendary world champions like Willie Hoppe and Willie Mosconi. In 1968, he became the first cue maker ever inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame.
Key Design & Characteristics
- The “Hoppe/Rambow” Ring: He popularized the signature thin ivory ring placed just above the short plastic butt cap.
- Titlist Blanks: A vast majority of his custom cues were built using high-quality Brunswick Titlist full-splice blanks, featuring distinct 4-point designs with vibrant colored veneers.
- Secret All-Wood Balancing: Rambow famously locked his workshop doors to balance his cues using varying densities of wood. He never used metal or lead weight bolts in the butt.
- No Rubber Bumpers: Original Rambow cues generally feature flat, bumper-less butt plates.
- Signatures & Inscriptions: He frequently signed his cues on the forearm in a distinct, elegant pencil script under the lacquer, often including the original owner’s name (e.g., “Made By Rambow” or “William McKee – Made By Rambow”).
